Historic Roman City of Chester, Cheshire
There are many fascinating places to see just a short walk away from your Wharton Lock holiday apartment in the centre of Chester.
The Romans came to Chester in AD 79, and built a camp and named it the Roman City of Deva. This camp was established to protect the fertile land around it from the Welsh Tribes, pirates and others who might harm it.
The full history of Chester from Roman times to present day can be seen at the Chester Grosvenor Museum. The museum contains Roman remains and also has an impressive collection of roman coins.
At many points around the city, evidence of the city's Roman past can be seen.
